Funk it up with bold colors, prints, and patterns.

All rules have exceptions— to which can be said for the world of grammar and fashion. And I’m going to show you how to be a fashion rule-breaker when it comes to pairing outfits in your closet. For the fashion “rules,” I’m generally against “matchy-matchy” dressing or accessorizing.  The exceptions however are all black (this can work well; try mixing textures here!) or all white (and all variations of white are okay to mix too). Outside-the-box of all white or black, I really suggest varying it up.  Of course not everything works well with everything, but there are many ways to remix your colors, prints and patterns to create new looks that effortlessly make a statement.

If you would like to head into your closet and try some “reimagining”: start with mixing a striped item with a print, such as a floral. A clever way to layer a graphic tee is under something sheer that has a subtle white-on-white polka-dot pattern! I like to mix colors that one wouldn’t normally put together such as pink with red or navy with black. Pro-tip: treat a camo print like a neutral.  You can also change things up by adding a green, blue or yellow shoe to the print or colored outfit for that extra pop!

Layer with colors but also with textures and proportions (ie: big chunky sweaters over long sleek silky skirts or dresses). Try something NEW.  Maybe when you are ready to put on your jean shorts, add a graphic tee and a long sweater or print kimono over them.  If you have a print skirt or pants mix it with another pattern.  Sometimes it will take a few tries… but if you are home (and hopefully feeling well), it can be fun to try remixing clothes in your closet and you don’t need to buy ANYTHING.  Suddenly what is old is new again.  Such a mood booster.

Have fun; don’t be too matchy-matchy and break a traditional fashion rule (or two)!
